Fall Mental Health Breakfast: Housing First

October 25 @ 8:00 am - 9:30 am

Free

The Housing First model is an evidence-based approach to housing stability and has been used in the United States since the late 1980s. Many still consider it to be radical and high-risk. Misconceptions still persist regarding an “anything goes” approach and have prevented more widespread adoption of this evidence-based and successful model in addressing homelessness for those with mental illness and substance use disorders. Attendees will learn about the philosophy and guiding principles of the Housing First model and review research surrounding the successes of Housing First versus Treatment First models. Attendees will discuss the benefits and challenges of working from a Housing First approach.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Examine the five core principles of Housing First
  2. Identify the benefits and challenges of Housing First versus Treatment First housing models
  3. Recognize and discuss the barriers to housing stability for individuals with disabilities

Speaker:

She holds a MS and PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Purdue University.
