Postponed: Join us on Friday, March 27, 2020, for the 12th Annual Elkhart County Community Summit on Children, “2020: A New Vision,” presented by the Elkhart County Juvenile Court.

Registration is $25 per person, which includes lunch and CEUS.

8:30 – 9:00 a.m.: Registration/Vendor Fair

9:00 a.m.: Welcome: What you teach a child can change a life.

Magistrate, Deborah Domine, Elkhart Circuit Court, Juvenile Division, and Pastor Jay Shetler, Maple City Chapel, Ph.D., HSPP, Psychologist. 

9:15 a.m.: Equity, Inclusion, and Cultural Competence

Julie Whitman, MSW, Executive Director, Commission on Improving the Status of Children in Indiana        Nancy Wever, MSW, Director, Indiana Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative

What do these terms mean, why should we care, and how do we address them as a state and county?

Learn how leaders from all three branches of state government as well as hundreds of stakeholders from across the state form to study issues affecting vulnerable youth and make recommendations for policies and practices that will improve child outcomes in Indiana.

Julie Whitman, Executive Director, Commission on Improving the Status of Children in Indiana. Julie is fluent in Spanish and holds a Master of Social Work degree from Boston College and a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University.

10:00 a.m.: Break/Networking

10:20 a.m.: Immigration Panel. Immigration law is not just for individuals seeking asylum. Immigration is an issue that affects all individuals in our community working with youth, and it is a growing issue. A panel of immigration lawyers will share their expertise and insight.

11:00 a.m.: Raising up a village.

1:20 p.m.: A Child’s Story 

1:30 p.m.: Self-Care: As mental health workers, teachers, counselors and juvenile justice professionals, we need to recognize vicarious trauma and take steps to address it. The session will look at this issue and guide us on how to care for ourselves as we care for others.

2:30 p.m. Closing remarks

CEUS: 4.0 Category II CEUs will be provided
